Stop Over Extensions

Ethiopia has a wide range of authentic and genuine attractions, besides the most known tourist routes. It is therefore possible to add some really special places and stop-overs to any more classic itinerary.

Here are some ideas

Gorgora and the Northern shore of Lake Tana (North)

Off of the main route, Gorgora offers its visitors history, art and nature: the beautiful scenery, Debre Sina church with its interesting paintings, the ruins of Gorgora Nova Church built by the Jesuits in the XVI century, and a charming eco-lodge on the lakeshore where to spend 1 or 2 nights.

Wenchi crater and lake (Center-West)

Near the city of Wollisso, 120km west of Addis Ababa, lies Wenchi Crater, one of the most attractive areas in central Ethiopia. The highlight are the interesting itineraries on foot or on horse-back. From a full-day excursion up to a couple of days in a lovely lodge.

Awash National Park & Aleghedi Reserve

This well-known national park offers interesting wildlife sightings (hippos, waterbucks, lesser kudus, jackals, warthogs, leopards etc), beautiful treks and also natural hot springs in an oasis. Rustic eco-lodges are available, yet an overnight in a mobile tent is really the best to get a full experience in this natural paradise. A 2-day-visit will allow travellers to explore the area well, including the Aleghedi Game Reserve. Awash N.P. can become the mid-way stop-over of an extension, by road, to Harar or the Rift Valley.

Dire Sheick Hussein Sanctuary and Sof Omar Caves (East)

Midway between Awash NP and Bale Mountains NP, this remote sanctuary offers a great opportunity to experience the unique charm of Sufi traditions, especially meaningful to understand also the spiritual power of the nearby caves. The need to overnight in a mobile tented camp and the challenging conditions of the roads make it fit to adventurous travellers only.
