Gheralta rock hewn churches

Breath-taking landscapes, canyons, abrupt escarpments, red layered stones are the place of some of the most amazing hidden treasures of Ethiopia: in the Tigray region are hidden more than 230 rock hewn churches, expression of the huge monastic movement that began on the IV century with the first evangelization of the region. The area of Gheralta offers wonderful walking experiences in which nature, history, art and outdoor activity interests are fully satisfied.

ACCOMODATION STANDARD:   High quality lodges are present in the region, but with scarce room availability. Medium range lodges and low range hotels are usually available. Very interesting camping experiences or community based guest houseas are also available.
WEATHER: The rainy season in the north is from June to mid-September. Nevertheless, is possible to visit the are a of Gheralta year round, since during the rainy season precipitation is intense but short and most of the time happening in the afternoon-evening, so they don’t disrupt the program. Average temperatures range between 29º to 10ª.
